Built for the View

Knutston Homes

It’s no secret that North Dakota’s weather is temperamental. Winters are often long, days can swing from warm to cold in a matter of minutes, and no matter the season, it’s probably windy. The fickle weather can make it hard to commit to having an outdoor space like a patio. However, the Knutsons came up with a clever way to enjoy their outdoor patio for eight or more months out of the year.

One of the most important aspects of their covered patio is the screen system. The screens are meant to keep out pestering bugs, harsh sunlight, and most importantly, the wind. The Knutsons installed a retractable Phantom Screen system which has made their outdoor patio a retreat from the elements. “It’s incredible how much those things block the wind,” says Cam Knutson. The glass railings are another perfect wind barrier because they do not block the home’s picturesque surroundings.

The wood-burning fireplace is the central part of the patio that every other part was built around. The large fireplace is a statement piece, but it does not detract from the striking landscape. The neutral stone colors complement the rest of the space’s neutral tones, making the patio feel cozy and inviting. It is also easy to use, as Cam requested that it be a gas starter.

One way the Knutsons planned for all seasons with their space was their addition of in-ceiling infra-tech heaters. The Knutsons said they have sat outside on a 40 degree day with the heaters and fireplace going and felt perfectly comfortable. For the hotter months, they installed fans to keep the space cooler. Another one of Cam’s favorite parts of the outdoor space is the Sonos speaker system which is installed below the TV and in the ceilings. The speaker system runs throughout most of the house, so music can be playing and synchronized both indoors and out.

The Knutsons say they are most looking forward to being able to host again with their new covered patio. Because the patio is large, it has enough room for an eight-person dining table, spacious sectional, and comfy armchair, which can perfectly accommodate big or small gatherings. The view from the patio opens onto grassy bluffs, not other homes, keeping the space private. The outdoor space will be a source of enjoyment for the Knutsons and their guests for years to come.
